The movie “Little Miss Sunshine” is a 2006 tragicomedy  film written by Michael Arndt.  This film is about a dysfunctional family who’s determined to get their seven year old daughter into her beauty pageant just on time. They take a cross country road trip and there’s a lot that goes on along the way. Some may say this film is about a family who yells and fights with each other all the time but I believe in the bigger scheme of things, it’s about communication, working together, overcoming obstacles, and not caring what other people think about you.

A big scene in the movie was when the family stopped for lunch at a nearby restaurant. They were all deciding what they wanted to order and Olive mentions to her mom that she wants ice cream for lunch. Her dad then steps in and tells his opinion on the matter. He tells Olive that pretty girls don't eat ice cream because pretty girls are skinny and ice cream makes you fat. Then the rest of her family encourages her to eat what she ordered to let her know that it’s okay to eat ice cream. The question is, if you were Olive’s dad would you have stated your opinion on the subject? There’s a norm nowadays that to be beautiful you have to be skinny and fit. Magazines and social media only really show beauty as skinny. Models are also usually tall and skinny, hence the beauty pageants. Now in our society we are working towards showing every body type as beautiful while still promoting not eating all junk food. Olive’s family was working to teach her that what you eat doesn’t define your beauty, and that she’ll always be beautiful.

When Olive was first accepted into the beauty pageant, she was just excited to do her dance, she wasn’t worried about if her routine or outfit was just like all of the other girls. I believe that everyone should be like Olive but instead, people care way too much about what other people think about them and they’ll suppress themselves just to fit in. This is a norm in our society and we need to find a way to work past it. Some might say “teach them at a young age” but in this case, don’t teach them at a young age, let them be themselves. Take Olive for example. She was in the dressing room getting ready to go on stage and when her brother saw her pageant outfit, he knew she wouldn’t fit in. He pulled his mom over and told her he didn’t want Olive going on stage because he knew she’d get made fun of. The mom said “Let Olive be Olive, I love how she’s herself without caring about anyone's opinion, let her go out and do what she loves to do.” I believe that as people, we need to stop caring about beauty standards and what others think about us and just be who you truly are, which is what this movie, Little Miss Sunshine, is attempting to show.
